Is The Law of Assumption Always Working for You? Changing Unconscious Assumptions That Shape Your Reality
The Law of Assumption is constantly in operation, just like gravity or the air that we breathe. Whether you're aware of it or not, your assumptions about life, often shaped by your beliefs - or what you are told - are creating your moment to moment reality. It works both for and against you - depending on what those assumptions are. If you are assuming negative outcomes or struggle, then this may show up in your reality in the same way that positive outcomes and ease will.
Our Unconscious Assumptions
Can we assume negative outcomes without even realising it? When you consider the social conditioning that shapes our view of reality and the way we take on the beliefs of others from an early age, then yes.
If you unconsciously assume that you are worthy of love and success because that's what you grew up with, then your thoughts, beliefs and actions will mirror that, creating what you see in your reality. If you grew up thinking and feeling unworthy of anything, then this may also be mirrored in your reality, showing up in different ways.
The law of assumption does not stop working because your assumptions are not consciously intentional, your reality is simply reflecting what you assume to be true for you.
Are Our Assumptions Then Stuck?
Not at all. The law of assumption will mirror back what we focus on, its just that up until now, you may have been mirroring your unconscious assumptions without even knowing about the law. Once you know that this shapes your reality, you can change it whenever you like.
Personally, I don't believe (yes my belief!) that we are stuck with those unconscious assumptions. I also don't believe that it is hard to change what you have been assuming up until now.
There is a whole industry that makes huge profits from the theory that you cannot change your beliefs without a lot of work, therapy or an expensive course. This is not to say that therapy isn't helpful for certain situations - and there is nothing wrong with signing up to an expensive course if it fills you with joy….but let's face it, most people buy courses because they feel like they are broken in some way, not because it feels good to do.
Change can be simple if that's what you decide
So how can we shift those unconscious assumptions? Well, what if you don't really have to - after all, who wants to spend hours unravelling all the unconscious assumptions they have taken on up until now?
Could it be that it is as simple as making a decision. What if beliefs are just decisions we have made and not the complex un-changeable parts of us that we have been led to believe?
So what do we do when we make a new decision? This can be as simple as making a statement or declaration about what you now want to assume to be true.
If you enjoy writing or journaling like me, you may want to write a few lines in your journal or script your new imaginal scene about your new decision or assumption..... but you don't need a technique or a ritual to do this. Just state your new assumption in your mind (or our loud if it feels good to do so) every time you catch that old outdated assumption creeping in.
We change our minds about things all the time. Maybe we see or hear something that gives us new evidence to change how we feel, or we change our minds about something we want to buy, So why not change our minds about a thought or assumption that no longer serves us.
Remember - 'change being hard' is also an assumption. Understandably so as we have been told that our whole lives. What if you decide today that it isn't?
Final Thoughts
In a nutshell, the law of assumption works whether we are conscious of it or not but it can be as simple as making a new decision or declaration of what we prefer to be true.
You don't need to try and follow each thought as it comes up as that will get really complex. Just catch yourself when you can and state a different assumption based on what you want to mirror back in your reality. Make your declaration and claim your preferred choice to be yours.
Make a decision today that changing your assumptions can be as easy as you want it to be and you may be surprised how your reality starts to shift with that new assumption alone.
